The Sunday after Clyde's Baptism, we blessed Evie. We figured...since all the family was there...why not?! It was a unbelievably hot in the chapel (the chapel A/C broke)... but she got blessed and it was a beautiful day!

Clyde, my fabulous step-father, FINALLY got baptized! Clyde was introduced to the church before I was born...and slowly amd methodically grew a testimony of his own. He surprised us all, even my mom. One Sunday evening he called me and asked if I had a minute to talk. I was actually thinking that he was calling about a business deal that we were working on. Kind of exhausted with talking about the business, I reluctantly agreed to talk. He said: "Erika, I would like you to think of a time that we can meet...pause, pause....so you can come to my baptism. Seriously, it took me literally seconds to understand what he was really saying and then to actually speak. WHAT?! I started to cry. I never thought this day would come on earth. My mom did. If you know her, I am sure she mentioned it to you a couple thousand times. ;) But she was right.

Well, my parents flew out all of my siblings and their families to witness this amazing event. Over 40 people came (and stayed in my parents house...yes all of us...no really, I am serious, all 40+ of us). It was really special. The grandchildren sang, my nephew baptized him, and my bother confirmed him. Pretty cool. Well, this all happened Memorial Day Weekend. But this past weekend, he received the Melchesidek (sp?) Priesthood. Next Memorial Day, we will all gather to see my parents temple wedding. Good stuff, right?! And now for the pictures.

We Moved!

Nick went to Interview for a New Mexico State Assistant District Attorney job on June 5th. By June 9th, Nick accepted the job offer, we put a bid on a house, and we started packing. Nick's job started 2.5 weeks later.

Panic set in.

Nick was leaving in 2 weeks. We packed like crazy while he was home. But after he left...I had 4 kids to take care of, a 5 BR house to pack up, and drive out to meet him.

Anxiety galore!

The kids and I (along with myfabulous sister and niece) rolled into Alamogordo, NM on July 13th. We did it. I still say that this summer was one of the toughest times of my life...but I did survive it! Gracefully?! Nope. But I survived. I should say...We all survived!

Beware: A Super-Long Birthing Story-- May be too much information for some (as in long/drawn out and too personal). Read at your own risk....

Nick, my mom, and I arrive at the hospital at 7:30 am. We are taken back to my own birthing suite. Ironically, it is the same suite that my great friend, Stephanie, had 9 months before. (Side note: They remodeled it, just for me!) Dr. Lines came in a short time later. She told me that I was a little more than 3 cm, 75% effaced, and 0 station. Then she broke my water. It was so fast and painless, I was surprised to feel the warm gush. I was instructed to take a long walk and we'll see how things progress. During my stroll through the fourth floor hallway, I started to get regular contractions... but these were not the serious labor contractions. After my walk, I decided to go sit in a whirlpool tub. It was a new experience for me...almost fancy! I enjoyed it. I did get contractions quite regularly, and they were starting to get quite painful. My fingers turned to raisins and the jets were starting to irritate my legs, so I decided it was time to get out. As I was getting out, I noticed that my contractions were being masked by the warm and relaxing water. Sure enough, once I stepped out...I was starting labor...at least I thought so. The nurse checked me around 2:30 and I was only a 4...after about 6 hours. Arghh. It seems, just like my last 3 pregnancies, I can't really get through labor without a little help. So it was time to give me a little pitocin--bummer. Before we started pitocin, I was introduced to a fabulous man...the happy-drug man! I warned him that the last 2 epidurals I received only worked on my right side. He assured me that he would make it work...and sure enough he did! After about 15 minutes, my labored breathing and intense pain subsided. Phew! I love the drug man. After the successful epidural, I was started on a super slow drip of pitocin (something like a teaspoon and hour--or something). Around 4 pm, Dr. Lines came in and checked in on me. After about 45 minutes on pitocin, I was finally a 7, 100%, and a -2. Woohoo. She then had me lay on my side (apparently a change in position can really help things move along), and then said she would come back after seeing her last 3 patients in her office. Well after about 30 minutes, I decided to call the nurse--I was getting the urge. Yep, it was time! The nurse checked me and sure enough her head was crowning. She ran to call the doctor and the nursery. Everyone kept telling me-- Don't push. Just wait. Just don't push! Can I just say, it wasn't easy to resist pushing. But I did. Once the Dr was ready, she had me push. I think I pushed for about 5 seconds before she said, "ok, stop!" I pushed again for about 3 seconds before she said to stop. Her head was out, but the cord was wrapped around her neck twice. Once that was detangled, I pushed again for just a moment and she told me to pull her out. That was the coolest thing. I usually get to watch, but it happened so quickly that we didn't even get to set it up. Bummer. But I at least got to pull her out and hold my girl! She is perfect! Apgar-- 9/9. This pregnancy was by far my worst, but this delivery was by far the best! I had a quick recovery (only 1 stitch). She began nursing right away, with a fabulous latch. And she is very well behaved! I think Heavenly Father knew that I could only handle so much! He sent me and sweet angel!

Last Thursday was a most fabulous "Springy" day! We took advantage and went to 3 parks that day! Ironically, it snowed the next day! (it did melt within 24 hours, but still!!)

Austin now has GLASSES!
Austin reads to me each night (a homework assignment) for about 20 minutes. At first, we had some issues...he doesn't like to be wrong and if I corrected him...oh boy! Anyway, he has vastly improved and rarely struggles with the words and intonations. Phew!

One of the main issues he had was focusing (as in--paying attention) on what he was reading. At least that is what I thought. I would grow more and more impatient. I knew he knew the words, but he would kind of space out for a minute. And then he started just making silly mistakes...like substituting a word with another that had similar letters in it. It finally dawned on me...he isn't having problems focusing/paying attention...he just literally was having focusing issues.

To make this dragging story shorter...I took him to the Optometrist (sp?!) Well it turns out, he has a bad astigmatism (thanks to his loving mother :)) and a lazy eye to boot (not me). Nice. So he got glasses. But now we get to figure out the lazy eye thing, with a specialist. And then the doctor told me that this is a familial trait, and I should have the other kids checked as well. I have appointments for them in a couple weeks with a specialist...so we'll see what happens (pun intended).

Ok, done rambling...for now, at least.

Snow Days...(there are so many!)

Many of you don't know this...but i am a closet photographer. I inherited one of my father's Canon A-1 cameras (circa 1980) with about 4 lens and a flash. I have used this camera to shoot engagement pictures, family portraits, baby announcements, and even weddings. I loved using it. But over the past 9 years or so, it has become quite obsolete. I mean...who really wants film when they can get instant digital?! When I was asked to take pictures of a friend's family, just recently, I explained that I could only do film. Nick overheard this conversation...and decided it was time for my dream to finally come true! So...One of my most favorite Christmas presents that I got this year...was a Digital SLR camera. And he also added in my favorite and most coveted lens...55-250mm (aka telephoto).

I have been playing with and experimenting with my new Canon SLR. I have taken many shots...and I have been quite smitten with it. I mean, the quality of the shot doesn't even compare to any of my other cameras. I am most impressed with the snow shots. Point and Shoot Digital cameras can't really capture snowfall (at least, not well). So I took my camera out and played in the snow. Enjoy. Give feedback.

A Little of Christmas...

We had a very fun-filled Christmas at home. We started Christmas Eve Night by making our Gingerbread House, decorating Santa cookies, and then opening our Christmas jammies.

Christmas morning started early for Sydney and I. We trekked out in the snow and went to the hospital...for one of those classic Sydney ear infections. The poor girl was miserable all day...but she still said that it was a good day. Here we are displaying/posing with our favorite Christmas presents. My sister-in-law Beth drew my name this year...and she gave me this beautiful Willow Tree family...showing our new addition. So precious.

Nick is showing off his most beloved gift...complete Seinfeld Collection! He still can't believe I got it for him and at such a great price too! Yeah!

Austin thinks he has the most fabulous parents in the whole world...since he got a Nintendo DSi.
Kaden got a lot of fun new things. His favorite...hmmm...all of them.
Sydney lost a Black and White Kitty (Milo) about a year ago. It has been a traumatic event in her life...and many tears were shed over her loss. So I managed to find a similar, yet slightly different version of Milo...his bigger sister--Lila! (Lila is the name that Syd wants to name our baby. While it is a great name, it isn't what we chose...so I suggested she have her Lila here).

Then the Wickhams came over for Christmas dinner. Baby Bella even dressed up for us! We had a fabulous and Low-key Christmas!

So Iowa gets snow. A lot of snow. But it rarely shuts down the city. Not until we had a pretty crazy snow storm. The schools closed...even ISU shut down. Apparently, that doesn't happen very often. Well, we got a lot of snow...and then we got some major winds. Snow drifts galore.

We were fortunate to go on our annual Family Disney Cruise...with my parents, my siblings, and their families...45 of us in all! We had a blast! The kids enjoyed every moment. They are at the perfect age to truly appreciate all that Disney has to offer. And it is great for them to get to know their cousins...since we usually only see them once a year (on the cruise). Thanks Grandma and Grandpa!

The kids were able to dress up 3 different times this year. We had our ward Trunk or Treat, a small friend party, and then Trick or Treating. They had so much candy! So much! This has been the most colorful Autumn in Ames...at least that I have seen in Ames thus far. I grew up in Maryland where the trees are over abundant and quite colorful. I love seeing all the colors. In fact, I remember my freshman year at BYU...I missed fall so much, I begged my mom to take pictures of some of my favorite trees in our neighborhood. It seems silly, but I really treasured those pictures of home.

Since we have moved here, Fall came and left so quickly. I suppose it was just so abruptly cold, that the trees didn't have time to go through the process. This year has been very mild...so the colors changed slowly and dramatically. I fell in love with Autumn all over again. So I had to take pictures...to remember Ames.

I cry a lot. It is actually very normal for me, but even more so when I am pregnant. I cry over happy things, sad things, inspiring things, or nothing at all. (probably more of the last than any of the others.)
I have been reading the NieNie Dialogues, a blog written by a woman who survived a plane crash, who is surviving being burned all over, and is functioning with grace. She inspires me so much. I read her posts and find such joy, sadness, love, deep admiration and inspiration. This woman is my hero. If she can face her day, so can I. She has been through hell and back...but she sees some joy in her very difficult life. I love her...and really I don't even know her. As I am writing this with tears in my eyes...I guess I just want to share her love!
Today's post pulled on the heart strings. I wish I could hug her. Instead, I'll just share my love her by sharing what I love most...Her faith is solid, her strength is powerful, and her edurance is admiral. Thanks NieNie!

We were so lucky to get some free tickets to Adventureland. For those who are wondering what Adventureland is...it is a small-scale amusement park located right outside of Des Moines. The kids had a great time. And surprisingly, the adults did too!

Gratitude Journal

I have been at a loss of what to put on the blog. I don't take pictures too often and I don't really feel like my life is that interesting, you know?! Well, I thought I should just log the things that I am grateful for. I guess it seemed like a worthwhile purpose.

I have been thinking about this one all week...I am so grateful for my husband!

I never doubt that he loves me (he tells me often and quite sincerely).
He often tells me I am beautiful, especially when I am not looking particularly smashing.
He repects my opinions, ideas, and time.
He listens to me and makes an effort to help.
He supports me while I try to improve my Mary Kay business.
He loves my cooking (when I actually do it, that is).
He lets me take naps and sleep in when I can (especially since I have been feeling quite drugged lately).
He strives to be the best dad he can be.
I feel valued when I am with him.

I may not have known him for a very long time before we got married...but I can say that I am a lucky woman. Heavenly Father must have known that he was the right one for me!

I heard something today...

...that will change my life FOREVER!

I heard the strong heartbeat of Baby #4! Yep, it is true...I am pregnant. I know I swore it would never happen. But I guess all I can say is: it did! We are all so excited! Going to the doctor and hearing that heartbeat made it all so real! I had all the symptoms: positive test, sore boobs, hound dog scent power, nausea, vomiting, and exhaustion. But now...since I heard the heart beating...it is all official! And all I have to say is: PHEW!

We told the kids several weeks ago, and they all shouted and screamed for joy! Here is a video of their response to the news.

So here are the answers to some of the questions you may have...

- No, it wasn't an accident. A while back I had a weird thing happen where it got me thinking about it. I mentioned it to Nick (who responded with a Heck NO!) and then he softened quite a bit to where he convinced me it could be ok.

- I am 11 weeks along.

- I am starting to show, my pants are to tight in the waist (so I can't hide it much longer).

- I am crazy sick. I was lucky with the last 3 to not experience much of this. But now...whoa baby! I have felt nauseous about 75% of the day. Yes, it sucks!

- The general hope is: it is a girl. Austin (the cute nerd that he is) wants even numbers- 3 boys, 3 girls. Sydney just wants a girl. And Kaden just wants to agree with them.

- The due date is April 2.

- Yes, we will be moving with a newborn next summer (per our poorly planned family tradition)!

Sydney Rides Without Training Wheels

We thought this would never happen. At the beginning of the summer she learned how to ride her bike just fine (w/o training wheels). And then one day she flat out refused to do it ever again. As many of you remember...Sydney had quite a traumatic bike accident over a year ago. She seemed okay about it...that is until she realized she could get hurt. For the remainder of the summer, she refused to do it. I have argued with her about it, reasoned with her, and even bribed her. But as you know, Sydney is STUBBORN! She refused...until Monday! She said she would try it, if we promised to hold on to her the whole time. Although it was hard for me to promise this (because I encourage independance), I complied. She did great. And then all week it rained. And then yesterday, she got on again. She did it. She was so proud and happy...and rode around and around! She did great!

This graduation was very different from my graduation. Mine was located in Constitution Hall in Washington DC. Hers was located in their High School Gym. Mine was semi-formal attire. Hers was casual. Mine took FOREVER! Hers was so short. Mine was cool inside. Hers was super sticky-hot! Mine was followed by a dinner out. Hers was followed by hoppin' graduation party. (side note: In the Midwest, it is expected to have a graduation party in your honor. There is a bonus...guests are supposed to bring a monetary gift to the graduate. Graduates often make somewhere between $1000-$2000 at their individual parties. In MD, I went to one friend's (JenJen) graduation party. And the only gift I received was a pen, that I didn't even like.)

Regardless of the differences, it was fun to see my little Al graduate!

This is Stacey...she is adopted into the family now! Yay Stacey! I found out that she was the Homecoming Queen, Miss Whitehall, and is a Power Lifting Nationalist!

Here is Allison. I thought she was looking at us...but it turns out she didn't find us until much later!

This is Kaden...who needed to "go potty" in the middle of the ceremony. Remember, it was in the Gym...so we were sitting on bleachers. We, of course, were sitting in the middle top row. So...it was fun saying, "Excuse me, I'm Sorry. Excuse me, I'm sorry!" to all the people I was sqishing through. Don't forget, it was a round-trip. So double the fun!

Our plans are changing ever so slightly. Originally, Nick planned to stay at ISU to get a PhD in Economics. When he started the program last year...he LOVED all of his classes. He seriously seemed to have fun...and he rarely complained about them. However, this last semester, he has been hating his classes immensly. They are mostly economic theory and la-la land stuff. You know, the what if this...and what if that...supposing that this...and so on. Basically it is higher learning structured for those who plan on becoming a professor or researcher. Something that Nick is discovering he isn't that interested in doing. And if he planned to continue just for the sake of saying that he has a PhD...he will in essence be pigeon-holeing himself into a career he wouldn't really enjoy or even planned on doing initially.

So the new plan is this: Get his Master's Degree instead. He has already completed all of the course work and needs to now write his thesis (or whatever fancy term ISU calls it). Basically, this means he is done in DECEMBER! I mean DONE. Like, forever DONE! No more school...an actual income...a real job...we can be grown-ups now! YEAH!

Ever since we officially made this decision, we have had many confirmations that this is the best decision for us. For instance...the economy has really taken a toll on the ISU Econ Dept. There have been teacher cuts and class cuts...so basically it is starting to crumble right before us. So maybe this is a good time for us to get out while it still good.

So this new plan means:

We will most likely be leaving Iowa in December/January.

Nick plans on working for a law firm doing water allocation, water rights, and water disputes (ideally aiding the Native Americans).

So, we will most likely be moving to Albuquerque.

I am quite sad that I have to leave bless-ed Ames (seriously I love it here).

Nick will be done with school (hopefully, FOREVER)!

And finally, we will actually be adding income to our bank accounts, not adding debt!!!

So this is a good thing for us. Oh, and if you know of any awesome water law jobs in New Mexico...let us know!

That's the title of a Peter Walsh book. For those of you who are out of the loop, he is the guru on organization and stream-lining (on TLC and Oprah). I haven't actually read it...but I am beginning to understand just what he means a little bit more.

So...Does This Clutter Make My Butt Look Fat?...is my motto for the month of May. I am stream-lining everything. I mean everything. I have already sent 5 bags to Goodwill and I am sure that I will easily have 5 more. Oh and I am talking about the monster black trash bags...not sissy walmart bags. Let me tell you...the purge is quite exhilerating!! Almost like a rush. I do feel a little lighter, and I have the sincere desire to lighten up a lot more!

So by the end of May, I hope to:

have a place for everything
closets are accessible and organized
toys are nice and neat
limited storage
feel a little stress-reduction in my life

Is it possible?! Oh yes. Just watch! I'll show all you nay-sayers!

Anson and Julia's Wedding

I had a lot of fun this past weekend! I was able to go to Utah for my neice's wedding. It was quite a whirlwind trip! I am summing up my trip....for anyone who cares.

Thursday--Flew in. Checked into Payson Hotel. Ate Chinese with the Matthews and met Anson for the first time. Met up with Lindsay...saw her new house interest and caught up on all the latest.

Friday-- Had a fabulous massage! I mean, fabulous! Met up with family at BYU. We tried to meet Peter, but it never worked out. Instead, Christa met us and we went to CAFE RIO!!! Yum! Went to Julia's endowment at the Mt Timp temple. Saw my dad (it's been several years). After the session, we met the kids at Los Hermanos in Provo. We had fun chit chatting and catching up with family. After, I went to Linds' house. I was seriously losing my voice at this point...so I didn't stay long. I wasn't feeling so awesome...it is so unfair to be sick on vacation.

BYU has a changed a lot since I have been there (~7 years)!

Saturday--Went to the sealing at Mt Timp Temple. I took a lot of pictures. My camera died shortly after. Sad. We went to the Clarion Manor in Payson for a luncheon. Then set up for the reception that night. At the reception, I saw about 10+ cousins that I haven't seen in 5-10 years. It was great catching up with everyone! I tried to help clean up, but wasn't really needed. So I went home around 11pm. I virtually had NO voice at this point! I then stayed up "whispering" (talking) to Deanna.

I then got home to sweet kiddos and a "welcome home mom" sign. So cute!

Primary Talent Show

Our Ward Primary had a talent show last Friday Night. The kids signed up to be in it themselves. Sydney told me that she was going to be playing the piano. Funny, how she doesn't even know how to play the piano (except random, made-up melodies). So I suggested she sing. She wanted to sing with her friends in her class. They sang, I am a Child of God. Sydney took this so seriously. She practiced everyday...saying: "mom, I need to go practice now, can i have privacy!" The girls really were so cute! Austin wanted to show off some of his skateboard tricks. Sadly, I only caught his last trick, which he didn't stick. He landed his other ones though! I have included some of my favorites...Enjoy!

It snowed again last night! Somewhere around 6 inches or so...they say. The family enjoyed the snow...played, shoveled, and even swung. Good times! The hill that they are sliding down is in the middle of our cul-de-sac. The kids had so much fun. In fact, Austin is still out there now!

Guess what?! We got a cat! Can you believe it?! I am mildly allergic to cats...and I sneezed for about 3 days...and now i feel immune to him. Luckily, he barely sheds, so that helps!
We adopted him from the shelter. He is actually a great cat. He is older, so he is quite mellow. He even lets the kids near by...sometimes. Kaden is the worst with him...but as Kaden says, "But Mom, I love him!" But the 2 best things about him: 1- He is quiet. 2-He knows how to use the litter box! Phew!

So I took Sydney to the hospital today! Yes...AGAIN! Can we say accident prone??!

Tonight's Adventure in 4 Acts

The Background:

Austin and Sydney decided to "golf" with a junior-sized golf club (yes, a real one). I was cleaning out the garage, and didn't notice this fabulous (*note sarcasm*) activity. So yay to me... I get the "inattentive mother award" for the evening!

The Injury:

Austin takes a swing at his tennis ball, and hits Sydney in the head on his back swing. The shrieking alerted me that something was amiss...I look over and Sydney has blood dripping down her face. After the bleeding stopped, I saw that the impact split the skin on her forehead pretty good...and I informed her that we would make a trip to the hospital.

The Post-Injury:

Sydney was crying a lot...obviously it was painful...but when I mentioned the hospital, the wailing increased in intensity. I told her that it wouldn't be like last time...I explained the joy of stitches, band aids, and stickers....and luckily, that won her over. In the mean time, Austin is crying too...wanting to know if I am giving him a time-out. The poor boy was a wreck (and it didn't even happen to him)! After explaining that I wasn't mad, I knew it was just an accident, and that Syd Syd would be okay--he calmed down to a whimper. Oh I almost forgot to mention, Nick had left the house to run to the store (about 20 minutes prior)...and he gets a cryptic call from me. I calmly, yet abruptly say: Nick, Syd got hurt. She is okay, but she needs stitches, so come home so I can take her to the hospital. *click* (By the way, you got to love the one car family situation!!)

The Hospital:

Sydney whimpers the whole way to the hospital, and the moment we walk in the door...it is all grins and giggles. I even had to remind her that "she needs to sit down" and "she can't skip in a hospital." We were at the hospital for about 45 min to an hour. You gotta love small town life!! We were the only ones there, in the ER at 6 in the evening. Sydney was awesome during the whole stitching up thing...only some minimal whimpering at the end (I wonder if the doc didn't numb it all over). Everyone was so impressed. I guess she had a lot of practice, right?!

The moral of the story:

Hide the golf clubs...it is never a good idea to let children (and even some adults) play with, let alone swing, a golf club!

So the day before my 29th birthday, we celebrated...Ames style. What does that mean you ask? Well, we went to Hickory Park, of course! They sang and all. According to the waitress, Kaden was way more into their singing than I was. Not surprising!

My actual birthday was a super day too...full of food, pampering, and fun! It started with breakfast out with the ladies. I sent out a mass email to ladies in the ward, and asked people to come celebrate with me. We went to the Cafe and I enjoyed my favorite apple french toast! Yummy, yummy! (Sorry to cause pangs of jealousy to you Erin!) After I got home from breakfast, I skipped a church meeting (shhhh!) and went Garage Sale-ing with Sydney instead. I spent way too much money...but got some pretty awesome stuff (including 2 floor lamps for $2 each, a $5 acoustic guitar with bag, 8 shirts and sweaters for myself, just to name a few)! I love Ames and its plethora of weekend garage sales. Let's see...after that...Nick surprised me with an appointment for a pedicure and manicure. He knows that he always wins me over with that present! Stephanie came along...and we enjoyed the pampering. And then that evening, Madison came over to babysit...and we went out to PF Changs in West Des Moines (and no, we didn't see Shawn Johnson, DARN!). What a fun Night!!! Bonus Points to Nick for throwing together a fabulous birthday.

We had to continue the celebration...since we didn't celebrate at home with candles and cake with the kids. Why this matters, I don't really know...but Sydney thought it was essential! So...The next day, we had the "BYUI Gangsta Pimp" missionaries and friends over to celebrate with the family. Luckily, my cake was "ferg-i-licious!" (Sorry, inside joke...sort of!) It was an all-around party, as far as those sort of parties go! Austin even helped me blow out my candle! What a stinker!! He thought it was hilarious! Funny Kid!

Well, I am 29 now...and so lucky!

Hi everyone! Let's just say...August was my hardest month so far this year. I have learned a lot about myself, my children, and my patience. As for myself, I have learned to realize that I cannot do everything. I have known this for a long time...but it was a friendly reminder lesson for me. As for my children, they are social like me...and camp, school, and other out-of-the-house activities are ways to keep the peace in our home. As for my patience, I have learned that I have very little (if any at all). Well, we have done some fun things this summer...

Visited family in Wisconsin...where we did fireworks, boating, and playing!
Took a family vacation (24 hours) to Mall of America and Nickolodeon Universe.
Entertained lots of family and friends as they made their way through Iowa.
And due to some maternal encouragement, I started my own business (as a Mary Kay Beauty Consultant)...and I actually am having fun with it!
Built a swing and climbing spiderweb in our yard...or I should say that Nick (and Chip) did that, while I cheered them on!

Yeah, now that summer is over...I am excited for school to start. I am hoping that this will bring a lot of peace back into our lives. I can dream, can't I!!! (wink, wink)

It is true...Kaden broke the tip of his finger. Ever since he grew tall enough to open the car doors...he finds every opportunity to test his new ability. And as a result...his finger was slammed in the car door. Nice, huh?! So for the next 3 weeks, we need to splint his two middle fingers together with gauze and tape...the sad thing is...those are his precious sucking fingers. Poor kid had to go cold turkey!

Luckily, Ames was not as severely affected by the floods in Iowa. And we were especially lucky that nothing in our home was damaged. Many people have had flooded basements and new backyard ponds. But all in all, Ames has been really blessed!

The Flood

So, I don't know if you have heard...but Ames flooded last Friday. It was a little crazy to see everything flooded and impassable. The neighbors said that this has only happened a few times since 1993. They told me all the dramatic stats of the 93 flood, and I concluded that this was small potatoes in comparison! So this is a picture of a horse pasture submerged about 3-4 feet underwater. I assume that the horses are doing just fine. But the crazy thing is that by Saturday, most things were flood free. And Guess what...it is supposed to rain every day this week! I am a bit nervous of what's to come!

I can't believe it is over!

Austin's Kindergarten Class had a small concert last Thursday for parents. It was cute to see them all singin the songs that they learned throughout the year. To be perfectly honest, it was hard to understand a lot of the songs...but they did their best. I am reallysad that the school year is over! I hope that his next teacher will be just as great!

My Little Miracle!

I can attest that miracles do happen! Our family experienced quite a miracle last week. Sydney had a grusome bike accident last Monday afternoon. I am going to proceed and share the story and pictures...

While playing outside with visiting family, Sydney lost balance on her bike (equipped with training wheels) and fell on top of it. At first, it was hard to see if she was injured or not, but I spotted a drop of blood on the sidewalk. I noticed that she had a gash (about 1 in wide) on her neck.

I scooped her up, and immediately put her in the car. Since our family was there to watch the boys, Nick and I took her to the hospital. Surprisingly, this neck wound was barely bleeding.
After and xray, the doctors thought it best to transfer her to Blank Children's Hospital in Des Moines (30 miles south). Syd and I traveled in an ambulance down to Des Moines (side note: that ambulance ride ignited a serious case of car sickness for me--no fun)!

Once we got to Children's, there were about 6 doctors and nurses awaiting her arrival. After an exam, a trauma surgeon informed me that Syd needed to have surgery to explore the damage from her "puncture." At this point, I still had no idea how her injury occured. When I called Nick to tell him about the surgery, he told me that after looking more closely at the bike, he saw blood on the bike's brake handle. So, we deduced that the the bike brake puntured her neck! What are the chances?!

The surgery took about an hour, and then the surgeon came to talk to me. He told me that the wound was 7 cm (just under 3 in) deep. And amazingly, it missed every vital thing in her neck! He said she was quite lucky. At this point, I finally realized the gravity of this situation. Sydney, really could have lost her life in this random accident. After a 2 day stay at the Hospital, we were finally able to come home.

Once we were home, she was back to herself--energetic and cheery. The next day, she went back to school. She told me (and I paraphrase): "Mom, everyone wants to see my neck. I think that they like it because it is red."

Yesterday, Sydney and I went back to Des Moines for a follow-up visit. The doctor we saw is the partner of the surgeon who operated on her. He basically told me: how amazing her case was...it seemed impossible that nothing more serious happened to her. He told me that when she came in, his partner called him in to the hospital (he was at a baseball game) to just see it. I guess Sydney's wound was a surgeon's "must-see!" Anyway, he also asked Sydney if she went to Sunday School...she said, yes...he then proceeded to tell her that she should say a prayer to God and tell Him thank you for saving your life! I told the doctor that we have said lots of those already, and plan on saying a lot more too!

We are so lucky to have Sydney in our life! She brings us energy, strength, love, laughter, exuberance, and joy! She really is special...2 miracle in a short lifetime!

Winter Quarters

At first, I was quite "unexcited" to drive the youth to the Winter Quarters Temple for baptisms. It is a 2 1/2 hour drive one way...and I never really enjoyed long drives.

But I had a great time. The kids in my car were great...we talked, some slept, some read, and some sat bored stiff. (You know, our ward has really great youth...they are just good kids. It make my job easier, that's for sure.)

While I was at the temple, I was able to do a session. I really enjoyed myself. Although I slept through some of it (we had to leave at 645 am), I really loved the peace and calm I felt there. Temples sure are great. The Winter Quarters Temple is small, by quite beautiful. Now I can say that I have been to 7 temples (DC, Provo, Mt Timp, SLC, Las Vegas, Nauvoo, and Winter Quarters). Not bad.

Nick Finished Year 1 ...

Even though we have 4 more years to go, it is still exciting that he has one year down. I swear, he has been in school forever...and has 3 degrees, going for #4 (BA, MA, JD, and PhD). Luckily, all of these degrees will help him get into his dream field! We are proud of you Nicky!!

New Toy

We finally got new Phones!!! I love it! I actually feel quite hip and tech savvy. I can claim to be a texter now...imagine me stepping into the techno world! Just needed to share that with everyone!

When do you have "the talk" with your kids?

I have been attending the Marriage and Family Sunday School Class during the 2nd hour of church. I have really enjoyed listening in on the lessons and the ideas of other parents. Today we talked about: "Discussing Sexuality with Your Children." It was a very interesting topic...and it has provoked a lot of thoughts...

I want to be the one to teach my children about sex and intimacy.
I don't want to make them believe that sex is bad; instead that it is special and important.
I want to teach them while they are young...but are they ever too young?
I want to warn them about dangers in the outside world...porn, abuse, etc.
I don't want them to ever feel uncomfortable talking about it with myself or Nick.

Does anyone have suggestions about when to start talking to them about this? Are there any good books out there? Any advice?

As I was googling the topic just now...I came across "A Parent's Guide" (put out by the church). Although it was published in 1985...it still seems somewhat prevelent today. There are a lot more issues facing out families now, but at least it touches on the basics.

Best Story Ever Written

I just finished reading "Darcy's Story" by Janet Aylmer. This book is "Pride and Prejudice" from Darcy's perspective. It was fun to read about what Darcy was thinking and doing during his absent moments. I really enjoyed his character development from selfish and prideful to humble and kind...it made the story come full circle for me. In my opinion, Jane Austen's "Pride and Predjudice" is the greatest romance ever written. Okay, that's all...my book report is done!

PS...I love the A&E film the best!!
